Livan

LIVAN has developed a provocative sound reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails and the tougher side of Bowie – but as this fiercely-independent auteur is indebted to nobody but himself, consider those comparisons as points of reference only. “Happy Returns”, his latest single, is a tale of psychic destabilization and loss of control, and LIVAN performs it with rare energy, commitment, and abandon that makes the content utterly believable.

Metric Perhaps what's most inspiring about the Metric story is that they've done it all themselves. As was recently reported in a New York Times article about the band's unconventional success story, the Toronto quartet turned down several lucrative recording contracts from majors, determined to bring their music directly to the fans. Back home in Canada, they've become one of the first truly-independent bands to earn a nomination for the prestigious Polaris Award.

Cazals create music by using guitar-driven tracks—rolling along like a train engine-- pressed upon by experimental, free-flowing strains of synths, New Order-style. The synths weave in and out, creating finger-snapping beats and giving their tracks a danceable, fun, foot-stomping feel. And the vocals are raspy, sullen, and gritty, adding a dirty, stripped-down, old-fashioned rock n' roll into the tracks.

Lawson Rollins 's nylon-string guitar playing is often a flash of sonic velocity, a sequined strings of dazzling tones, a collision of influences, a sophisticate's sugar rush. "The Fire Cadenza" is all of these things. But speed isn't his only game, and he isn't limited to Spanish classical techniques: on his albums (and he's released many), he seamlessly integrates elements from disparate musical traditions.
